Football league season
The 2024–23 Liga Portugal (also known as Liga Portugal Bwin[2] for sponsorship reasons) 3️⃣ was the 89th season of the Primeira Liga, the top professional league for Portuguese association football clubs, and the second 3️⃣ season under the current Liga Portugal title. This was the sixth Primeira Liga season to use video assistant referee (VAR).
FC 3️⃣ Porto were the defending champions, having won their 30th title at the previous season. Rio Ave, Casa Pia and Chaves 3️⃣ joined as the promoted clubs from the 2024–22 Liga Portugal 2 replacing Belenenses SAD, Tondela and Moreirense, which were relegated 3️⃣ to 2024–23 Liga Portugal 2.
As the 2024 FIFA World Cup was held between 20 November and 18 December 2024 due 3️⃣ to the climatic conditions of the host country Qatar, the league featured an extended pause during the season. As national 3️⃣ team players had to be released by their clubs on 14 November 2024, the last Primeira Liga matchday before the 3️⃣ break was scheduled for 13 November (matchday 13). The league resumed nine weeks later on 28 December.[3]
Benfica secured a record 3️⃣ 38th league title after beating Santa Clara 3–0 on matchday 34.

Rio Ave (promoted after 3️⃣ a one-year absence), Casa Pia (promoted after a 83-year absence) and Chaves (promoted after a three-year absence) were promoted from 3️⃣ the 2024–22 Liga Portugal 2 (finishing first, second and third places), replacing Moreirense (relegated after eight years), Tondela (relegated after 3️⃣ seven years) and Belenenses SAD (never relegated before).[note 1]

The relegation play-offs took place on 3 3️⃣ and 11 June 2024, between Marítimo, who finished 16th in the Primeira Liga, and Estrela da Amadora, who finished 3rd 3️⃣ in Liga Portugal 2.
