89th season of top-tier Portuguese football
Football league season
The 2024–24 Liga Portugal (also known as Liga Portugal Betclic[1] for sponsorship reasons) ♨️ is the 90th season of the Primeira Liga, the top professional league for Portuguese association football clubs and the third ♨️ season under the current Liga Portugal title. This is the seventh Primeira Liga season to use video assistant referee (VAR).
Since ♨️ Portugal dropped from sixth to seventh place in the UEFA association coefficient rankings at the end of 2024–23 season, only ♨️ the two best-ranked teams can qualify for the UEFA Champions League (the champions enter directly into the group stage, and ♨️ the runners-up enter the third qualifying round). The Taca de Portugal winner qualified to the UEFA Europa League group stage ♨️ while the third-placed team qualify to the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round. The fourth-placed team, meanwhile, qualify to the ♨️ UEFA Europa Conference League second qualifying round.[2][3]

Changes [ edit ]
Moreirense, Farense (after an one and two years ♨️ absence, respectively), and Estrela da Amadora (promoted for the first time in history in its current form founded in 2024 ♨️ or after a fourteen-year absence if counting the club that disolved in 2011 due to bankruptcy) were promoted from the ♨️ 2024–23 Liga Portugal 2, replacing Marítimo, Paços de Ferreira, and Santa Clara (relegated after thirty-eight, four, and five years on ♨️ the top flight, respectively).
This season marks the first season of top-flight Portuguese football since the 1984-85 season where no teams ♨️ from the Azores islands or Madeira have taken part.
